This is our current pack: Ryder Todd and Miss Mocha. Obviously two different breeds. Ryder Todd is an aggressive chewer with teeth that close together like a well made bear trap. Miss Mocha has an underbite with jowls that can get in the way of chewing.
During one of our trips to Trader Joe’s in Rochester, MN an employee saw us looking at the dog treats. Trader Joe’s dog treats have always been a hit with all of our dogs. They asked if we needed any help as I was looking at the Chhurpi Dog Chew trying to figure out what it was and how to say it. I never did figure out how to pronounce it. The employee said this was a favorite with her canine chewing champ. She said you could also soak it in water and microwave it for a different texture chew. She also said if our dog didn’t like it we could bring it back for a money back guarantee. She also stated that it is the rind from cheese making it better than some plastic toy with pieces that will get chewed off and possibly swallowed.
Miss Mocha tried chewing on it and really got into so she must have liked it. We have other chew toys that she doesn’t bother with at all. Being this one is actually a piece of cheese we felt it would be a great one to have on hand. Mocha had a go at it for a while until we noticed her gums bleeding. Her teeth structure is not perfect and her jowls often get caught up in the action. We then tried soaking it in water then microwaving like the instructions said. This was still too hard for her to chew. Sadly this is not a chew treat for Mocha.
Along comes Ryder Todd. An energetic Mini Husky Mix (?). We are getting him DNA tested soon so stay tuned to see what Wisdom Panel DNA tests say he is. Ryder has tons of energy and likes to being doing something, anything, all the time. He loves to chew on hard toys or bones. He has already destroyed some aggressive chewer plastic toys and we fear he might be swallowing some of the pieces. We remembered this cheese chew was a two pack and we still had the other one. With some supervision we gave it to Ryder to give it a try. He loves it! And he is able to chew it without bothering his gums. It has lasted through many hours of chewing and still looks close to the original size. We watch for pieces to come off that might be sharp and take those away from him to avoid issues they may cause if he eats them. Smaller pieces with no sharp edges do not cause us to worry, it is cheese.
Not everyone has a Trader Joe’s nearby so we looked at some similar ones on Amazon so we can keep them in stock in between Trader Joe shopping trips. Check our affiliate links for the ones we are going to try next. Look for ones that are milk based so you know they are the cheese treats. While these might not be for all dogs as we found out it is a great option for those aggressive chewers that can handle it.
